Save boot up time on your pc !
I'm sure everyone has thought at one point awesome i can set my favorite software to load on start up. 2 weeks later after restarting your pc however many times "i hate how this program always opens up! it takes so long!"most of these programs show up in the ¿system tray¿. Some programs as you probably have noticed will not give you the option of turning off the "activate on startup" processes. Well there are other ways of getting it to stop loading on startup and get to keep the program installed. When this is finished your computer will start up mostly like it did when you got the pc, obviously slightly slower then when you go it since you don't want to shut down your all important firewall and anti virus software. Now you will want to make a ¿restore point¿ just incase you close something important and can't remember how to start it back up. This is not mandatory but recommended unless you are confident that you wont close anything you need. Before you try any of this be sure to read everything you are going to do write it down copy it into a notepad print it out anything because you don't want to be continuously opening up this page to see how to do something.
Making a restore point
For XP users
start button -> all programs -> accessories -> system tools -> system restore -> next click make a restore point -> click next -> call the restore point something you will remember like "before removing startup programs" -> create -> close.
For Vista users
Start -> Control Panel -> System Under "Tasks" on the right side of the window -> click System Protection -> In the System Properties box that comes up click Create at the bottom of the window.
Now that you have taken the time to create a restore point we can move on to actually speeding up boot up time.
Speeding up your startup and shutdown
For Xp users do this
Start -> Run -> type "msconfig" -> and press <Enter>
Vista users do this
Start -> type "msconfig" into the Search box(small window in the bottom of the start panel) -> and press <Enter>.
Now Click the startup tab and you will see a list of all the items that load at startup. Each item will have a check box next to it uncheck something and it will no longer load on startup. Lets say you have Aol Instant messenger (A.I.M) you want it on but not the instant you log in find A.I.M in the list or whatever the program is called and uncheck it now it will only load when you tell it to from your start menu. When you uncheck any programs you installed you don't want to start click the apply key then ok and you will be prompted to restart your pc make sure you don't close your anti virus software or firewall you need that. You can undo all of this by loading our system restore point or redoing the msconfig steps and rechecking the boxes. This will all save you some time loading your account on your pc. If when looking through your programs you don't want to start up and don't know the name of something you see don't close it go to google and type in the file name to see what it goes to. With this all said and done you can now get your pc to start with minimal hassle just don't loose place of this guide. If you want to get a normal startup back without going through all your programs and turning them back on startup the long way on the first page of msconfig there's a normal startup button if this isn't selected click this then apply and you will be prompted to restart again. everything will then start up as normal u can also use this process for any heavy gamers out there since very little is running this gives you the least slow down you can have.
